Stop Breathe Deep Talk LOUD

  • lndications that you could be having trouble with swallowing

Trouble chewing your food.
Food getting stuck in your cheek.
Drooling while you eat.

Having trouble swallowing your pills.
Having trouble moving your food from the front to the back of the mouth. (like when I eat a spoon of peanut butter)
Choking or coughing when you swallow or within a minute of swallowing.
Choking/coughing when you eat soup (chicken noodle) or with a bowl of cereal.
Losing weight because it takes time to chew the food.
Increased chest congestion.
Running a fever (temperature spikes 1 hour after a meal.)

  • What to do:

Talk to your doctor or health care provider.

  • Some things that could help:

Avoid distractions (shut the tv off, focus on eating).
Eat at the kitchen/dining room table.
Always sit up as much as possible for all eating & drinking.
Try taking one pill at a time with a spoon of apple sauce, jam, yogurt etc.
Avoid straws.
Creamed soups are easier to swallow than soups with broth (chicken noodle).
Let the cereal get soggy, absorbing the milk before eating.
Don't throw your head back to try and swallow something.
Drink before or after meals.
At extra sauce, gravy, soup stock to the food to keep it moist & wet.
