Larry Horwitz is a local businessman; entrepreneur and community activist. He has represented and served his community on several boards and committees including three terms as the Chair of the Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Association, and several years as a member of the Wyandotte Street Business Improvement Association’s Board of Directors.
As the Chair of the Downtown Windsor BIA, Larry has worked hard to help revitalize the city’s centre. He has championed the closure of after-hours bars; security cameras on downtown streets; facade improvements; retail and business recruitment; and infrastructure and beautification programs. His work has brought positive change and improvement to downtown Windsor.
An accomplished author; a former freelance journalist for the New York Daily Times; Larry attended York University in Toronto, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology. He then continued on to Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he studied Quebec Relations and Politics. Larry also completed course work for a Masters in Political Science, and was a Political Science doctorial candidate at McGill University in Montreal, where he later lectured in American-Canadian Relations.
Larry spent his formative years on Victoria Avenue, on the very same block where he now resides with his wife and five children. His grandfather had a bag and barrel store in the city market, and his father, Aaron, owned the Big Bear Supermarket across from the downtown market on McDougal Street.
Larry believes that bold, innovative policies, programs and initiatives focused on securing a sustainable future—environmentally, socially, culturally and economically, will ensure that Windsor is a better place to live, work and raise a family.
